FAQ's About the Label Application Process

Q: How long does it take to get a label approved?

A: The current turnaround time for TTB processing of a label is 3-4 weeks.

Q: How many applications do I need to submit for each label I am seeking approval?

A: Two applications are required for each label. One needs to have an original signature and the other may be a copy. Please make sure you affix a complete set of labels to your applications. DO NOT USE STAPLES.

Q: Where must the alcohol content appear on the label?

A: The alcohol content MUST appear on the FRONT label in type not smaller than 1 mm.

Q: What do I do if I’m bottling for someone else?

A: You must get your basic permit amended to include that winery as a DBA (“doing business as”) on the permit. You may then apply for label approval for your DBA using your basic permit number. Keep in mind that the bottling statement on the label must match the exact company name, city and state of DBA on your permit.

Q: How do I get my permit amended to add a DBA?

A: A DBA can be added to a basic permit by contacting the National Revenue Center in Cincinnati and request that the bonded winery permit be amended to include the desired DBA.

A: No, a regular label approval and label exemption cannot be obtained on the same application.

Q: What is required mandatory information on a label?

A: Class/type, alcohol statement, bottling statement (name and address), sulfite statement, brand name, net contents (if not embossed in bottle), government warning. Mandatory information must appear in type size not smaller than 2 mm on containers larger than 187 ml and a minimum of 1 mm for containers of 187 ml or less.
